Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Veneers are custom-crafted, wafer-thin shells of porcelain that your Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics provider bonds to the front of your permanent teeth. Veneers make it easy to mask minor oral imperfections and make your smile appear more balanced.

If you have a chipped or cracked tooth, your provider might recommend a single veneer. That said, most people get between six and eight veneers to ensure a symmetrical smile.

What types of issues can veneers correct?

Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics uses porcelain veneers to correct minor oral imperfections, including:

  • Chips, fractures, and pitting
  • Pointy teeth
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Discolored or stained teeth

You might also benefit from porcelain veneers if you have a noticeable gap between two or more teeth.

What does getting veneers involve?

At Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics, getting veneers takes two appointments about a week apart.

First veneers visit

During your first visit, your provider conducts an oral exam and takes X-rays to assess the condition of your teeth. If there aren’t any signs of tooth decay or gum disease, your provider prepares your tooth to receive veneers. They administer a local anesthetic, numbing your mouth, and remove a thin layer of enamel from each tooth.

After preparing your teeth, your provider takes impressions and sends them to a dental laboratory. The lab uses your impressions to design and craft a custom set of porcelain veneers.

Second veneers visit

A few weeks later, when the lab completes your veneers, your return to Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics. Your provider numbs your mouth and bonds the veneers to your permanent teeth. Once the bonding material dries, they trim any excess material and polish your teeth.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Porcelain veneers usually last between 12-15 years*, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan. Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics recommends:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Flossing your teeth before going to bed
  • Avoiding bad habits like chewing on pen caps or biting on ice cubes
  • Wearing a nightguard if you clench your jaw
  • Protecting your teeth during sports with a mouthguard

In addition, try to visit Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.
