A root canal is an endodontic procedure that removes damaged or infected pulp from the center of a tooth. Tooth pulp is a soft substance that contains nerves and blood vessels. It provides nourishment to your teeth and allows for temperature sensations but isn’t necessary for their long-term survival.
By undergoing a root canal, it’s possible to preserve your natural tooth, ensuring optimal oral health.
Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics uses root canal therapy to treat damaged or inflamed tooth pulp. Damage or inflammation can occur for various reasons, including:
If you regularly experience tooth pain or swollen gums and they don’t respond to at-home treatment like over-the-counter pain medication or an ice pack, make an appointment at Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics right away.
At Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics, a root canal takes two appointments about a week apart.
During your first appointment, your provider conducts an oral exam, asks about your symptoms, and takes a series of X-rays. If they determine you have a damaged or infected tooth, they move forward with treatment by numbing your mouth and removing the pulp from your tooth.
After removing the pulp, your provider cleans your tooth and fills it with a material called gutta-percha. When the gutta-percha dries, your provider takes impressions of your tooth and applies a temporary filling.
Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics sends your impressions to a dental lab that uses them to design and manufacture a custom dental crown.
A week or so later, when the lab completes your crown, you return to Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics. Your provider removes the temporary crown and replaces it with the permanent one. Then, they polish your tooth and provide care instructions.
After a root canal, many people experience mild discomfort and increased tooth sensitivity. To reduce the pain and speed up the recovery process, Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics recommends:
Most people feel back to normal within a few days, but if your symptoms persist or worsen, don’t hesitate to contact your provider.
