Dentures Q&A

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable oral appliances that replace some (or all) of your permanent teeth. By replacing your natural teeth with a custom oral prosthetic, you can reduce the risk of potentially serious issues like gum recession and bone loss.

Dentures mimic the strength, function, and appearance of your natural teeth. They’re easy to care for and can enhance your quality of life.

What are the benefits of dentures?

Dentures offer various benefits, including:

  • Easier biting and chewing
  • Improved speech
  • Confidence
  • Durability
  • Improved oral health

Dentures can also enhance your facial structure. When you’re missing teeth, the skin around your mouth folds and sags. Dentures prevent both of these issues.

What are the types of dentures?

Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics offers several types of dentures, including:

Full dentures

Full dentures replace all of your permanent teeth. They rest on your natural gum tissue and are held in place with a denture adhesive.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures replace only some of your teeth. They look similar to a retainer and have a wireframe that attaches to small metal clasps.

Implant-retained dentures

Implant-retained dentures connect to dental implants — small titanium posts inserted into your jaw. Implant-retained dentures are unique in that you don’t have to remove them. Instead, you brush them twice daily like your natural teeth.

What does getting dentures involve?

At Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics, getting dentures takes at least two appointments and sometimes three.

First dentures visit

If you’re getting full or partial dentures, your provider takes impressions of your mouth and sends them to a dental laboratory. Technicians at the laboratory use your impressions to design and manufacture a custom pair of dentures that fit your mouth perfectly.

If you’re getting implant-retained dentures, your provider inserts several titanium posts into your jaw during an outpatient procedure. Afterward, they prescribe medication and send you home with recovery instructions.

Second dentures visit

When the dental lab completes your full or partial dentures, you return to Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics. Your provider has you try them on and makes adjustments as necessary.

If you’re getting implant-retained dentures, you return to the practice when the implants finish integrating with your natural bone. Your Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics provider takes impressions of your mouth and ships them to a dental laboratory. The lab uses your impressions to design and create a set of implant-retained dentures.

Third dentures visit

When your implant-retained dentures are finished, you return to Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics for the third and final time. Your provider bonds your dentures to your implants and tells you how to care for them.
