Crowns and bridges are custom dental prosthetics that rehabilitate your smile. Even though they’re often mentioned simultaneously, crowns and bridges are two different things:
Crowns are synthetic caps that cover a damaged or decaying tooth. They return a tooth to its near-original shape and size, making it easier to eat. Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics offers tooth-colored crowns. These crowns look very similar to your natural tooth enamel and are just as strong.
Bridges replace a missing permanent tooth. By filling the gap in your smile, you can reduce the risk of potentially serious issues like gum recession and bone loss.
At Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics, getting crowns and bridges takes at least two appointments.
At your initial consultation, your provider conducts an oral exam to assess the condition of your teeth and gums. If you have damaged, decaying, or missing teeth, they prepare your mouth to receive a crown or bridge.
If you’re getting a crown, your provider removes a thin layer of enamel from the top and sides of your tooth and takes impressions.
If you’re getting a bridge, your provider removes a thin layer of enamel from the two teeth on either side of the gap in your smile and takes impressions.
After taking the impressions, your provider sends them to a dental laboratory. Techs at the lab use your impressions to design and craft a custom crown or bridge.
When your crown or bridge is finished, you return to Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics. Your provider numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and bonds your crown or bridge in place. Before you leave, they polish your teeth and provide care instructions.
Bridges and crowns often last a decade*, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan by practicing good oral hygiene. Parkway Dental Care & Orthodontics recommends:
